We are a family with 2 kids (4yrs, 7 yrs) that are in the process of building their future "dream" family home located in a suburb of a large German city. We had hired an architect who has developed a plan for a house in collaboration with us over the last months - these plans have been validated high-level from a structural engineering perspective, meet the required building regulations and have also received planning approval, but we have NOT yet started any construction activities. The plans (see attached) reflect broadly our desires for number, types/usage and size of rooms. They also reflect our style and design preferences.
However, we have come to realize that there are several aspects of the house where we feel we have not yet reached a “final solution” that we are satisfied with. As a result, we are now seeking architects that are interested to take the existing plans as base version and offer ideas and improvements for the topics outlined below. Other general suggestions are welcome, but not mandatory.
The existing plans have been attached as pdf, but dwg files can be made available if requested.
We have the following the observations on the current status and ask for proposals/designs that answer these below questions:
1) Living room integration into main building cube and roof form
We generally like the positioning and layout of the living room with its full glass front that has a “protected backside” and opens towards the south into the well-grown garden. However, as the perspective south-east shows, we feel that it seems disjointed and more like a “simple add-on annex” of the main cube rather than an architecturally interesting element that integrates well with the main house. Moreover, visually it seems to appears very “light” (especially the roof) compared to the quite compact nature of the main cube.
Question / objective: How to better integrate the living room into the building? Specifically, what innovative and interesting roof form/shape/concept for the “living room” would work – but still align with the main building (see some general examples)?
A) The roof of the living does NOT need to have terrasse/balcony; moreover, the roof should be capable to house a photovoltaic plant to generate electricity; finally the roof should not visually impair (too much) the view from the childrens’ rooms (if for example it is proposed to be raised).
B) The roof should “reach out over” over the actual living room to provide some sun protection and shading in the summer months . Ideas on how this could look – either as integral part of the roof, or as a separate “add-on element” that integrates are requested.
2) Entrance area / stair case / wardrobe / guest toilet
The entrance area is supposed to be open, welcoming and warm space that will be key to the house in day-to-day usage and define the design. The current plan have a guest toilet with walls that do NOT go all the way to the ceiling, but leave for about 50cm of space above it for light effects and display smaller pieces of art. Whilst we like this idea, it implies that the wardrobe area is rather open and risks in day-to-day-use to become clogged (unlikely kids/adults will really “properly” store their belongings when coming/going in the wardrobe on daily basis - as such, we are looking for alternative designs where the wardrobe is kept more separate).
Note/backgroud: regarding the staircase, we are currently foreseeing a staircase as per the attached pictures. Alternative ideas / suggestions welcome.
3) Cellar – wellness and storage area
We have not yet planned the sport / wellness area or the “hobby room” area in the cellar area.
Question / objective A: How could the sport / fitness room be structured to accommodate the following (the bathroom facing the room can of course be integrated or changed in any proposals):
- Sauna for 2 people
- Resting area/relaxation bed
- Fitness “area” where to host a treadmill and 1 other fitness appliance (probably should also position a TV)
Question /objective B (optional): The technical room (“Haustechnik”) is fixed in the plans, however the arrangement of the storage rooms as well as the “Hobby” room should be optimized / improved for its useability?
The façade is planned as per the initial draft perspectives provided. We are seeking feedback and input to further optimize the visual design and consistency of the façade and are requesting proposals. Any suggestions to modify windows should be included (for example if rooms are seen as lacking in light).
Note: the roof above the 2nd floor should NOT have a railing as high as currently shown in the proposals (approx. 60cm (7,42m – 6,82m) above 2nd floor bedrooms). Instead the terrace on the roof should have a separate all-glass railing.
5) Other suggestions
Any other suggestions are welcome and will be considered, however these suggestions must preserve the overall “living requirements” of a family with 2 kids, guest room, nanny room, office and separate music / library.
Current plans for interior design of house:
- General principles: design / modern / open / welcoming / communicative / pragmatic / future proof
- Parquet in all rooms, except bathrooms/wet areas and technical cellar rooms / storage areas
- Light wall color (probably mainly white)
- All doors with full height
